As a stylist, I get hair questions ALL THE TIME!!! I thought it would be fun to occasionally post answers to your questions right here!

If you have a hair question that I haven’t answered and it’s eating away at you, please leave it in the comments below and I will happily answer it in an upcoming post!

Michelle asked:

I use a great shampoo and conditioner that I love, but my hair tends to get dry and tangled . I want to know if I should do a hair mask once a month or something else to give my hair a boost ? Or Is shampoo and conditioner all I really need ?

I’ve never been a stylist that works hard at selling product. I always tell my client what I’m using as I apply it and why so if they buy it’s because they understand the reason and like the result. That being said, I do think that everyone can benefit from the occasional treatment. Hair that tangles easily usually does because it’s baby fine so the benefit of treatment would be to repair any damage caused by brushing out tangles and to add moisture. Since your hair is fine, use a lighter product less often. I love Signature Mask by Oribe and would recommend you use it once every other week to avoid weighing down your hair. Apply it to clean hair in the shower and try to leave it on about 10 minutes. Let me know how it works for you Michelle!

Sugar asked:

What’s your favorite hair product for volumizing?

If you’re really lacking volume I would shoot for a volumizing shampoo and conditioner as well as styling products. I highly recommend Volu Shampoo and Conditioner by Davines and am obsessed with Volumista Spray by Oribe. The spray would be used at the roots before blow drying and adds incredible volume! If you need a boost to your already styled hair, try Powder.Puff by Kevin Murphy. It can be sprinked on the roots of styled hair and you will say VA VA VOOM! Perfect sexy, bed head hair!

Tracey asked:

What is the best shampoo & conditioner for normal hair?

You are so lucky to have normal hair!!! I would define normal hair as not chemically processed, not damaged, not fine or overly coarse, not frizzy or too limp. Those are all issues that women use product to address. You have tons of options Amy! I would look for products that say they’re for Normal hair in the price range you’re comfortable with. For a less expensive option I like Shampure Shampoo and Conditioner by Aveda or Shampoo One and The Conditioner by Paul Mitchell. In the luxury range, I really like Signature Shampoo and Conditioner by Oribe. Let me know what you end up with!

Amy asked:

Your hair is gorgeous, I would love to know how you cut it and what products you use on a daily basis. Thank you!

Thank you so much Amy!!! If you’re referring to my hair in my profile picture, it is actually full of Hot Heads Hair Extensions! When I’m wearing extensions, I usually don’t cut my own hair very often as clean lines make it harder to blend the extensions to look natural. I recently took my extensions out for a short break and I love to be heavily layered with layers around my face. I find it is the most versatile cut for me and gives me tons of styling options! As far as products, I am a huge advocate of not washing daily. I usually wash 1-2 times a week so I keep my product use to a minimum unless I have an event or appearance to do. I use a leave in like Super Shine Moisturizing Cream by Oribe or Young.Again by Kevin Murphy before I blow it out and through out the week may add a little hairspray or Dry Texture by Oribe for volume or texture! If you’re a daily washer you should watch my eHow video about only washing once a week! I explain why your hair gets greasy and how to get to the place where you don’t have to shampoo all the time!

It was so much fun to answer your hair questions and I would love to do it again! Please leave any questions you have in the comments or on my Facebook page!

I guess that’s where my similarity to Dolly Parton’s morning ends! I have been incredibly blessed with my career as a hair stylist. Besides loving the actual work I do, the best thing about my job has to be my schedule and the time it allows me to spend with my husband and 3 kids. I have clients ask all the time how I fit it all in so I thought I would share what a typical day looks like for me.

6:00 am My alarm goes off and I have to jump out of bed to accomplish all that needs to be done before I leave the house

The best hour of my day… I have one quiet, uninterrupted hour to take a shower, do my hair and make up and get dressed. All alone!

On this particular day, I worked in the salon from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm. I work 3 days a week so the days are usually long!

I saw 9 clients and did 2 tints, 5 highlights, 4 extension move ups, 4 haircuts and 8 blow drys.

In between clients, I can usually be found on my iPhone checking emails, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter!

Sometimes my sweet clients surprise me with treats like these new sunglasses by IVI from Sharon. Love her!

None of my days would be complete without the help of my fantastic assistant, Erin. She literally guides me through the day, keeping me on schedule, abreast of schedule changes, client formulas, shampooing, mixing color, blow drying, taking payments and pre booking clients. And Lord knows I wouldn’t eat if she didn’t remind me, pick up lunch and tell me when to sit down and eat it!!! She will be a great hair stylist when she starts taking her own clients.

As this day was wrapping up, I started to think about the unfinished closet reorganization project I had going on at home. Since the kids would surely be in bed by the time I got home I decided a quick stop at Target was in order.
7:30am Argue with my almost 4 year old daughter about what she’s wearing to school and ultimately give in. (Choosing my battles!)

7:40 am My sweet hubs heads out the door with the 2 little kids to deliver them to school while I get myself ready for work

I really wanted to finish the clean up in the next few days and it’s always so much quicker to go to Target alone! This is what my bedroom looked like when I got home…

A few more hours on this project and my closet would be super organized. I’ll tell you all about that in a future post!

What is your typical day like? Do you like to work a few long days or more shorter days?

I recently asked my friends on Facebook and Twitter if they had any questions I could answer about hair or beauty. Here are a few of the questions and my answers:

Stephanie asked, “Every time I wash my hair I end up with a handful of hair:( Any tips to keep me from going bald??”

Hair loss can be a symptom of health issues so if a client is REALLY suffering from hair loss I always recommend they speak with their doctor. That being said, I think we women can be a little bit dramatic when talking about losing a few hairs! The average person loses 100-200 hairs per day. If you only wash your hair every few days, you may notice more hair coming out when you wash. And if you wear it up, those hairs are trapped and you may feel like you’re losing more when you take the ponytail or bun out! I have also found that women with dark or long hair will notice the hair more than light or shorter haired women. Stephanie, if you think you’re losing more than the average, you should speak with your doctor!

Michele asked, “I’m over straightening treatments because I like my volume and wave just not the frizz. What’s the best way or produces to fight frizz with naturally wavy hair? Air dry?”

Frizz is an issue for many women and can get worse when there is more humidity in the air. I agree Michele, I’m over straightening treatments too! I have been working with clients on embracing their natural texture which results in healthier hair that is easier to style. With naturally wavy hair, I would recommend a product to enhance the wave and minimize frizz. I really love Moroccan Oil Curl Defining Cream. It has good hold, will define curls or waves and keep your hair frizz free. Apply it to damp hair that you have combed out and either air dry or diffuse. The key to frizz free texture is to let it dry completely before touching the hair. Don’t monkey with it while it’s still damp or you will encourage frizz! I hope that helps!

Lauren asked, “Hi Tera! I would like to know what skin care regime you follow?”

I typically have very dry skin and for the last 2 years I have been using the skin care line from my girlfriends spa. It is called Sweet Skin Care. For the first time in my adult life I actually really like my skin. I feel like it is glowy, moisturized and younger looking. Every morning and evening I wash with Deep Clean. Apply Immerse Serum and then Quench moisturizer. In the day time I follow that with Shelter sunscreen. A few times a week I use Polish while I’m in the shower to exfoliate. I’m also a big fan of Botox (when done lightly) and do that every 3-4 months. That is a huge help when it comes to keeping my wrinkles tame!

Kelly asked, “Can virgin hair be highlighted without using bleach? I heard hair that is not processed can be highlighted with a hair color instead of bleach. Is this true?”

Yes Kelly! That is true! Hair color CAN lift virgin hair. Hair that has never been colored with artificial color can be lifted up to 3 levels using hair color. You won’t get super blonde highlights unless your hair is lighter than dark blonde to begin with. The greatest benefit to using color rather than bleach is less damage. Let me know how your highlights turn out!

I still have more questions to answer so watch for another post coming next week! And you if you have any questions for me, feel free to leave them in the comments!

You guys, I almost forgot to tell you about the videos I filmed for eHow Style! I filmed 27 videos in one day and they are all about color and styling! Here is one of my favorites for you to check out!

You guys know how obsessed I am with the entire product line by Oribe, right?! Every time a new product is about to be released, Oribe sends one (ONLY ONE?!) to the salon for the stylist to try and I usually try to hide/hoard it in my station!

The latest is so good that I was counting down the days until it was released so I could share it with you!!!

Meet Shine Light Reflecting Spray…

And here is why I LOVE it:

It is super light weight, silicone free, gives brilliant illumination and tames frizz and fly aways.

Shine enhances color and highlights

Is formulated without paragons or sodium chloride making it safe for color and keratin treatments

Has UV protection

And is for anyone lusting after instant shine

These are my two favorite ways to use Shine…

I find it is easiest to control and achieve a perfect all over shine when sprayed in using the blow dryer to move the hair as you spray. Like this:

I also love to spray it on my hair when it is pulled back. It makes buns and ponytails super sleek and shiny.

Like this:
